A two-vehicle collision Wednesday on Highway 1 near Piedras Blancas left one person dead and sent three others to the hospital with injuries.
The head-on accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. about five miles north of the lighthouse. One vehicle drifted over the road’s center line, causing both vehicles to collide near their left headlights, according to the Officer Phil Knox of the CHP.
One occupant was airlifted to the hospital in a helicopter, Knox said, and two others were transported to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center via ambulance after being extricated from the vehicles. The San Luis Obispo County coroner was called to the scene for the fatal victim, Knox said.
Highway 1 was closed in both directions north of Piedras Blancas for about two hours after the collision.
No further information was released Wednesday afternoon about the identity of the victims or the cause of the crash.
