Sheriff’s officials say local homeless man may be homicide victim

San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s deputies searched a Santa Margarita home early Wednesday for clues on the whereabouts of a missing man investigators suspect may be the victim of foul play.

The agency said in a news release Wednesday afternoon that its officers searched a home in the 2200 block of I Street about 7 a.m. That home was a “location of interest,” according to the release, in the disappearance of Jared Jay Walters, 38, whom the agency describes only as a “transient” without a known city of residence.

A Sheriff’s Office spokesman could not immediately be reached for more info, but the release said that the investigation into Walters’ disappearance is continuing. The Sheriff’s Office is calling the disappearance suspicious, “since investigators have developed information that he may be the victim of foul play.”

Walters was reported missing to the Atascadero Police Department on Feb. 26.

The news release does not provide any physical descriptors or other identifying details about Walters. However, it asks any residents with information about the case to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 805-781-4500. Crime Stoppers is also offering a $2,500 reward for information on Walters’ whereabouts. Contact Crime Stoppers at 805-549-STOP, or visit www.SLOTips.org.
