Kayakers rescued amid strong currents in Shell Beach

Five kayakers were rescued Sunday afternoon in Shell Beach after several of the kayaks overturned due in part to a very strong current, Cal Fire Capt. Dave Kay said.

At 1:45 p.m., dispatch began receiving calls from bystanders reporting the overturned kayakers near Ocean Boulevard and Palomar Avenue in Shell Beach, Kay said.

Cal Fire Pismo Beach responded to the four kayaks (one of which was a tandem). Rescue swimmers assisted one of the kayaks to shore; the other three kayaks were able to make it to shore themselves.

No medical assistance was needed for the kayakers, Kay said.
