Paso Robles woman severely injured in crash after swerving to avoid donkey in road

A Paso Robles woman suffered major head injuries when she swerved to avoid a donkey in the road and crashed on Highway 154 near Foxen Canyon Road early Saturday.

Katrina Sue Cummings, 53, of Paso Robles was driving west on Highway 154 near Los Olivos about 5:35 a.m. when she swerved to avoid the donkey and her 2004 Toyota overturned, according to the CHP. Cummings was thrown from her car, which hit a fence and came to a stop on its side in a field.

Cummings was taken to a hospital with multiple skull fractures, according to the CHP.

The donkey had just been hit by another car before Cummings came upon it, according to the CHP. Peter Franklin, 24, of Solvang also was driving west on Highway 154 when his 2016 Jeep struck the donkey in the road just east of Foxen Canyon Road. Franklin, who wasn’t injured, pulled over to the shoulder. He and a passenger got out of the Jeep to move the animal off the road when Cummings came along, the CHP said.
