An altercation between people on a freeway off-ramp reportedly led to what sounded like a gun being fired Saturday night in Atascadero, according to Atascadero police Sgt. Robert Molle.
The incident occurred at the Curbaril Avenue off-ramp of northbound Highway 101 in Atascadero, police said. The first call to police was received at 7:23 p.m., Molle said.
Several witnesses said they heard what sounded like a gunshot. One witness said they saw a man bleeding from the head, and the man told the witness that he had been shot, Molle said. The people involved in the altercation then got into two cars and drove away.
When police arrived at the off-ramp, those involved in the incident had left the area; however, there was blood and other physical evidence present, Molle said.
The vehicles involved were described as a dark, possibly blue, sedan and a red or maroon Mitsubishi Galant, according to a news release.
The freeway off-ramp and a section of Curbaril Avenue were closed for about four hours after the incident, Molle said. Ground units and a helicopter searched the area. Hospitals within a 100-mile radius were also notified.
No one involved in the incident has come forward, Molle said. The incident remains under investigation.
