Pedestrian killed in Highway 101 accident in Pismo Beach
A local man was fatally hit by a car early Saturday morning on Highway 101 in Pismo Beach.
A 23-year-old Santa Maria man driving at about 2:40 a.m. struck a man in his 40s walking in a southbound lane of Highway 101 just north of Oak Park Boulevard, CHP Sgt. Eric Martinez said.
The accident caused the pedestrian to be thrown onto the pavement, and the impact killed him immediately, Martinez said.
The driver, who remained at the scene after the incident, told officers he didn’t see anyone in the road but felt an impact when his car hit the pedestrian. The man was driving about 65 mph and alcohol wasn’t a factor in the incident, Martinez said. At this time, no charges are expected to be filed against the driver, he said.
Sgt. David Nottenkamper of the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office said the county coroner has identified the pedestrian as a local homeless man, but his name is being withheld until his family is notified.
“He had no identification on him at all,” Nottenkamper said. “We do have him identified, but we have not been able to track down the family yet.”
The first person to arrive on the scene was an off-duty sheriff’s deputy headed home after work, Nottenkamper said. The deputy saw something in the road and returned to the scene, where he found the deceased victim and the driver, Nottenkamper said.
