At Cal Poly, baby horses frolic in the Equine Center fields

At the Cal Poly Equine Center, mares are tenderly watching over foals near the mare barn and pastures. The foals mostly eat and sleep and stay close to mother. Here, a young filly sleeps while its mother nuzzles it.

Cal Poly is full of foals.

Now is the time to see the cute colts and fillies that spend their days eating, sleeping and frolicking in the green pastures surrounding the mare barn at the Equine Center. About 40 student volunteers are keeping 24/7 watch over the mares.

“The students take turns doing four-hour shifts to constantly watch and care for the mares,” said volunteer Christine Dasso, an agriculture business student. “The foals are kept and cared for around two years, then they’ll be sold at an auction conducted on campus.”
