SLOPD to step up traffic enforcement over the weekend

Starting Friday, the San Luis Obispo Police Department will increase bike and pedestrian safety enforcement operations and focus on areas throughout the city where high numbers of accidents have occurred over the past three years. The stepped-up enforcement will last through the weekend.

Special attention will be given to drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, and failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, according to a department news release. Pedestrians and bicyclists aren’t off the hook, though. Officers also will be on the lookout for jaywalkers and minors riding bicycles without helmets.

The department said in the release that it has investigated three fatal and 257 injury collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians over the past three years.
