High seas in Morro Bay: A Coast Guard training opportunity
Two Coast Guard boats were training in the large surf just outside the South Jetty in Morro Bay on Tuesday. The vessels, stationed in Morro Bay, conducted a surf maneuvering operation that involved moving in and out of the surf in preparation to help a surfer or boat in distress.
Each year, the Coast Guard practices operations in large winter surf to prepare for rescue missions. Swells that peaked at 16.2 feet Monday eased into the 12- to 14-foot range Tuesday and are forecast to drop to 6 to 8 feet Wednesday. The next storm should arrive on Friday and could bring 0.76 to 1.5 inches of rain before tapering off Saturday, according to PG&E meteorologist John Lindsey.
