The San Luis Obispo Symphony is expanding its music education programs this season with the help of two Cal Poly graduates, the symphony announced last week.

Mi Young Shin, a violinist with the SLO Symphony, started as its music education director Jan. 4. She works with Brett Malta, a Cal Poly graduate who has managed the San Luis Obispo Youth Symphony since June 2014.

Shin, who holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Cal Poly, served as associate conductor of the Cal Poly Symphony from 2000 to 2002 before moving to Virginia. There, she worked with young musicians as an orchestra director and ensemble coach and performed with the Prince William Symphony Orchestra and Manassas Symphony Orchestra.

Shin now provides after-school instruction at Los Ranchos Elementary School in San Luis Obispo via the symphony’s Strings in the Schools program. Other symphony education programs include the Musical Petting Zoo and the Symphonic Forays lecture series.

The SLO Youth Symphony performs Sunday and May 15 at the Performing Arts Center in San Luis Obispo. For information, visit www.slo
