SLO County veterans services officer selected

San Luis Obispo County supervisors are expected Tuesday to hire Christopher Lopez as the county’s new veterans services officer.

County administrators chose Lopez after a lengthy recruitment process but need approval from supervisors to make the hiring official. The hiring is on the board’s consent agenda, which is reserved for noncontroversial items.

Lopez currently serves as a veteran services representative in Monterey County and was previously veterans services officer for Santa Cruz County. He served in the U.S. Army from 2001 to 2005, serving in Baghdad and other areas of Iraq and Kuwait.

His starting salary would be $75,876 a year. With the standard benefits package, his total annual compensation would be $184,477.

Navy veteran Paul Porter is the county’s current interim veterans services officer. Porter was appointed after the previous VSO, Dana Cummings, resigned in September.
