The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors has waived $35,000 in construction fees for the historic Dana Adobe in Nipomo.

The nonprofit organization that runs the adobe, Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos, will break ground next month on major improvements including a visitors center, museum, office building and outdoor event space.

The fee waiver received enthusiastic support from supervisors. Supervisor Debbie Arnold said the Amigos are the most determined and hard-working group of volunteers she has seen. Supervisor Lynn Compton, whose district includes Nipomo, said the adobe is the jewel of the South County.

The Amigos group was formed in 1999 to restore the crumbling 177-year-old historic structure and gain national and state historic recognition. The group asked for the fee waiver because the improvements will be a public benefit for the county.
