The San Luis Obispo Police Department will be stepping up both DUI enforcement patrols as well as patrols focused on bicycle safety ahead of Super Bowl weekend.

On Thursday, officers will be on the lookout citywide for violations of traffic laws by both motorists and bicyclists. Police will be specifically patrolling areas where bicycle collisions have occurred with the most frequency, the department said in a news release Monday.

According to the department, it has investigated 153 injury collisions involving bicyclists over the past three years.

In addition, on Sunday, San Luis Obispo police will be deploying “saturation patrols,” in which officers will be cracking down on alcohol-impaired drivers. Those heightened patrols will occur between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m. in areas with high frequencies of DUI arrests and accidents, the department said.
