Atascadero’s first-ever Tamale Festival will be Jan. 23 from noon to 4 p.m. in the Sunken Gardens in downtown Atascadero.
The free event will feature homemade tamales from a variety of vendors along with tamale contests for “Most Popular Tamale” and “Judges’ Favorite Tamale.”
The Atascadero City Council will kick off the judging at 12:30 p.m. to select its favorite tamale, along with the people’s choice for the most popular tamale at 3:30 p.m.
Tamale Festival entertainment will include dancing and a mariachi band, along with bounce houses, face painting, balloon animals and activities for kids.

Four tamales will be sold for $10 as part of a Festival Deal ticket rate; in addition the first 100 people to by Festival Deal tickets will receive one extra tamale for free. Festival Deal tickets go on sale Friday at Colony Park Community Center. They’ll be available at the event as well while supplies last.
Colony Park Community Center is located at 4499 Traffic Way in Atascadero and is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
