Oceano to get CHC medical center

Community Health Centers will build a 13,600-square-foot medical center in Oceano in a lot that was previously set to be a mixed-use development.

The San Luis Obispo County Planning Commission on Thursday unanimously approved a variance for the medical center, which exempts the project from zoning rules that required residential housing and a commercial component on the site.

In 2008, the planning department approved a minor use permit for a development on the site, at the southeast corner of 21st Street and Highway 1. That mixed-use development included 20,000 square feet of retail or office space and 22 apartments.

The project was never built, and its approval expired in 2011. CHC bought the property this year and plans to build a medical center that will feature a clinic, dentistry, chiropractic, mental health services and a pharmacy. It will also have a 68-space parking lot.
