New parking restrictions posted on streets near Cal Poly
Correction: An earlier version of this story gave the incorrect time for when the parking restrictions are in effect; parking is limited to two hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
In a move to curtail parking congestion in neighborhoods near Cal Poly, a new two-hour restriction is being posted on several streets along the south side of the university.
The change, starting this week, limits parking to two hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the following streets near Cal Poly and the Alta Vista neighborhood:
- The north side of Slack Street between Longview and Grand Avenue
Those areas, adjacent to Cal Poly, have long been free parking on a first-come, first-served basis and are often used by students searching for a free spot to park off campus.
“Recently students have even been double parking waiting for somebody to walk out and free up a space,” said Tim Bochum, deputy director of public works. “It ends up jamming up traffic while they wait for a spot.”
San Luis Coastal school district also recently relocated Teach Elementary School to a site off Slack Street, creating more traffic in the area.
An ad hoc committee comprised of residents from neighborhoods adjacent to Cal Poly and representatives from the city and the university formed after neighbors expressed their concerns about a new Cal Poly dorm planned for that area. The committee recommended the new parking rules to help deal with curbside parking in the fringe between the university and the neighborhoods there.
