An RV caught fire Wednesday morning on northbound Highway 101 south of San Luis Obispo.

An unknown mechanical issue is the likely cause of a recreational vehicle fire that delayed traffic this morning on northbound Highway 101, according to CHP.

The blaze started around 7 a.m. after the driver of the RV heard some popping sounds and pulled onto the right-hand shoulder of the highway between the Avila Beach Drive and San Luis Bay Drive off-ramps, CHP spokesman J.W. Townsen said.

The driver was looking into the cause of the sounds when the fire started, Townsen said. The man, who was not identified, was not injured, and a damage estimate was not available.

The incident delayed traffic on the highway through Pismo Beach, and one non-injury accident was reported in the area of Highway 101 and Price Street, he said.

Assistant County Administrative Officer Greg Schulte was on his way to work when he drove past the fire and took a photo about 7 a.m.

His commute was delayed only a few minutes, but some co-workers reported that traffic was backed up all the way to Arroyo Grande about 8 a.m.
