Former Cal Poly President Robert E. Kennedy died at his San Luis Obispo home on Christmas Day. He was 95.

The namesake of the university's library, Kennedy worked at Cal Poly for 39 years. He started as a journalism instructor in 1940, and would serve as president from 1967 to 1979.

“I live Cal Poly,” Kennedy said in 2001 interview with The Tribune. “Except for my family, it was the most important part of my life."

Mary Kennedy, his wife of 72 years, echoed those comments Monday: "He devoted his life to Cal Poly."

A memorial service is being planned.
