Investigators: Man shot ex-girlfriend, then himself in murder-suicide near Santa Margarita

Sheriff's investigators released more information Tuesday about a murder-suicide that took place east of Santa Margarita on Dec. 1.

Investigators believe Stephanie Rodriguez, 19, of Templeton, was driving a car on Hwy. 58 that day with her ex-boyfriend, Hugo Enrique Serrantos Castillo, 22, of Atascadero, according to authorities.

It's believed that Castillo shot a gun several times in the car, according to officials. The car then rolled down an embankment.

Castillo apparently got out of the car after it came to a stop and shot himself. He died of a single gunshot wound.

It is not believed that Rodriguez fired any shots.

Investigators did not say where or how many times Rodriguez was hit.

Forensic evidence, ballistics and autopsy results confirmed the scenario.

Investigators are still doing forensic work and awaiting toxicology results, officials said. Results are expected in two weeks.

A supervisor at the company where the Rodriguez worked said last week the couple had dated and had broken up.
