Grover Beach finished major, multi-million-dollar upgrades to its aging sewer system in late June — paving the way for a new street repair project to get underway.

The sewer project took nearly eight months to complete and was officially done the week of June 29, according to a city news release.

The new sewer infrastructure is more reliable and can carry more flows through neighborhoods across the city, the release said.

“We are incredibly proud to bring this major infrastructure project to completion on time and on budget,” Grover Beach Mayor Kassi Dee said in the release. “Modernizing our sewer mainlines is one of the most important investments we can make to protect the health, safety and daily quality of life for our residents.”

The $3.6 million project was developed from the city’s 2019 Sewer Master Plan with an objective to replace and revamp clay sever mainlines along North 9th Street, Ramona Avenue, North 8th Street, Rockaway Avenue, South 4th Street and Manhattan Avenue in Grover Beach. It was funded through a bond issuance, according to the release.

According to the city, these streets were “critical areas” that carry residential flows straight to the South San Luis Obispo County Sanitation District, the release said.

“Replacing miles of decades-old clay pipes with modern, durable materials is crucial to modernizing our system and ensuring long-term reliability for our city’s core infrastructure,” Grover Beach City Manager Matt Bronson.

Where will roads be repaired in Grover Beach?

Now that sewer upgrades are complete, Grover Beach is launching a new residential street repair project.

Using Measure K-14 funds, 12 blocks across the city will be repaved and rehabilitated, the city said.

“Public Works timed these projects so the street paving followed the sewer upgrades, preventing the need to cut into the roads for future utility repairs,” the release said.

Some of the Grover Beach streets that will be repaired include 9th Street, 11th Street, 12th Street, Brighton Avenue and Ramona Avenue, according to the release.
