One person was found dead after a vehicle plummeted off the side of Highway 166 near the San Luis Obispo-Santa Barbara county line Friday evening.

According to a Santa Barbara County Fire Department post on X, units responded at approximately 5:06 p.m. for a reported single-vehicle accident “where the vehicle went over the side of the highway approximately 200 feet.”

One deceased occupant was located during the response and “an extensive search is underway for any additional occupants,” the Fire Department said.

Other units at scene included Los Padres National Forest, SLO County and Santa Maria fire personnel.

According to the Fire Department, Highway 166 was reduced to one lane as of 6:14 p.m. Motorists were advised to use alternate routes and avoid the area.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, the post said.
