Have extra garbage you need to get rid of?

One local waste removal company will soon hold one of its two annual cleanup weeks for customers, picking up extra trash and bulky items for free.

Find out what trash can be left on the curb:

When are trash cleanup weeks in SLO?

The city of San Luis Obispo partners with San Luis Garbage, a subsidiary of Waste Connections, to handle garbage, recycling and organic waste collection.

The city of Morro Bay partners with another Waste Connections subsidiary, Morro Bay Garbage, for trash collection.

Waste Connection also operates South County Sanitary and Mission Country Disposal, which handle garbage pickup in other parts of the county.

San Luis Garbage will holds two cleanup weeks in the spring and fall — on Monday, June 22, through Friday, June 26, and Oct. 12 through 16.

This “community service program” offers “free collection of extra trash bags for single-family residential customers, along with discounted scheduled pick-up of bulky or large items for both single-family and multi-family customers,” the city of San Luis Obispo said.

Trash and bulky items should be left out by 6:30 a.m. and the garbage cans cannot be blocked as the automated trash trucks will still be in use.

What can I leave on my curb during cleanup week?

During cleanup week, customers can leave up to six extra trash bags on the curb to be picked up.

Each bag, which can have a capacity of up to 32 gallons, must weigh less than 75 pounds and stand no taller than 4 feet.

“Organic material, such as yard trimmings, leaves, grass and untreated wood are not accepted in your extra trash bags on Clean-Up Day, nor are recyclable items,” the city said.

Trash bags are sent to the landfill, the city explained, and organics and recyclables “should never be disposed of in landfills.”

What about bulky items?

Bulky items such as appliances, mattresses, scrap metal and furniture can also be picked up during cleanup week but need to be scheduled in advance with San Luis Garbage.

Single-family customers are given one free bulky item pick up during cleanup week and additional items will face a discounted charge.

Multifamily customers can schedule four free bulky items pickups during cleanup week.

“Residents must work with their landlord or property manager to schedule and coordinate an on-site location for these pickups,” the city said.

You can contact San Luis Garbage at 805-543-0875 to schedule a bulky item pickup.

What items are not accepted?

According to the city, the following items will not be accepted during cleanup week:

  • Items weighing more than 200 pounds
  • Concrete in trash bags
  • Bundled waste such as carpet, wood and yard waste longer than 4 feet
  • Waste that’s not neatly bundled or bagged
  • Hazardous waste such as paints, cleaners, motor oil and pesticides

When are other cleanup weeks in San Luis Obispo County:

Paso Robles Waste & Recycle is the sole franchise collection company in the city of Paso Robles. “Each residential customer will receive one free cleanup day every 12-month period,” the waste removal company said. “We will take up to seven items on your scheduled clean-up day.”

Other cities offered spring cleanup weeks, but also have cleanup days in the fall:

  • Arroyo Grande, Avila Beach, Grover Beach, Pismo Beach and parts of Nipomo: Oct. 26 to Oct. 30
  • Cambria, Cayucos, Los Osos and Morro Bay: Sept. 28 to Oct. 2

According to Waste Connections, customers in Nipomo Community Service District and Oceano do not have scheduled cleanup weeks.

Instead, each household is given two cleanup vouchers.
