The Five Cities Fire Authority will conduct a prescribed burn in southern Arroyo Grande on Friday.

Smoke will be visible between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. while the burning operation is underway, according to a news release Tuesday. In the release, the Fire Authority advised motorists to use caution when travelling in the area, as fire equipment and personnel may be present.

The operation is being conducted to reduce the accumulation of eucalyptus slash on The Pike. Eucalyptus slash contains volatile oils that make it highly flammable, resulting in increased wildfire risk.

The Five Cities Fire Authority is conducting the burn in coordination with the city of Arroyo Grande and the Temple of the People, a religious organization whose headquarters are located near The Pike.

The operation was initially scheduled for May 31, but unfavorable weather conditions resulted in its postponement to Friday. If weather conditions or air quality become unfavorable, the burn may be cancelled and rescheduled again, according to the release.
