Vegetation fire burns nearly 27 acres near SLO County line
A vegetation fire burned nearly 27 acres near the San Luis Obispo County line on Sunday afternoon.
The fire, dubbed the Cotton Fire, burned 26.7 acres north of Highway 41 in the Cholame Hills area near the border with Kern County, according to Incident Command updates reported by Watch Duty.
The fire had reached 50% containment as Sunday afternoon.
The fire was first reported shortly after 12:30 p.m. at about 3 acres in light, flashy fuels running uphill on the north side of Highway 41, according to Watch Duty.
By about 12:44 p.m., the fire had grown to approximately 8 acres with a moderate rate of spread, according to Watch Duty.
Air Attack requested two additional air tankers around 12:50 p.m.
By shortly after 1 p.m., Incident Command estimated the fire at 15 to 20 acres and said crews were making good progress.
At 1:31 p.m., Incident Command estimated the fire at approximately 50 acres and 15% contained. About five minutes later, firefighters reported forward progression of the fire had been stopped.
An update around 3:33 p.m. revised the fire size to 26.7 acres with 50% containment, according to Incident Command.
No structures were reported threatened Sunday afternoon, and officials did not announce any evacuation orders.
Traffic on Highway 41 was briefly affected Sunday afternoon as emergency crews responded to the fire, though no prolonged highway closures were announced.
