Is your child learning how to swim?
In San Luis Obispo County, multiple organizations offer swim lessons and classes all summer long.
Whether it’s your baby’s first time swimming or your teenager is mastering the breaststroke, local swim programs cater to varying age groups and skill levels to fit your child’s needs
Swim lessons fill up quickly, so be sure to check registration dates and class capacities when deciding on a program.
Newborns, infants and children up to 3 years old must wear swimming diapers.

Group, private lessons offered at SLO Swim Center
SLO Swim Center, 902 Southwood Drive in San Luis Obispo, offers swim classes for children ages 6 months to 17 years old.
Instructors teach different swimming styles including freestyle, backstroke and butterfly stroke.
Swimmers must sign up for classes that match their age range and skill level, or they will be switched to more appropriate classes.
The center offers a Baby & Me class for children ages 6 months to 3 years accompanied by grownups.
For kids 3 to 5, there are three different swim classes based on skill levels or certifications.
Classes for more experienced swimmers are offered at SLO Swim Center for children 5 and up.
Private lessons are available for anyone age 3 or older.
Classes can be booked online via the San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Department website, with prices and schedules varying by course.
Cal Poly Recreation Center has swim lessons
The Cal Poly Recreation Center in Luis Obispo offers swim lessons for kids up to 16 years old during the summer.
Children age 4 to 16 can take small group lessons to improve their swimming skills, with classes available on weekdays and Saturdays in July and August.
Pre-swim family lessons are open to younger children accompanied by their guardians. Baby & Me classes are for children 6 to 24 months old children, while Toddler & Me lessons are for kids ages 2 to 4.
Both pre-swim family lessons will be held in the morning on Saturdays in August.
Group swim classes at Cal Poly cost $100, and include four sessions that are each 45 minutes long.
The Cal Poly Recreation Center also offers private one-on-one lessons, costing $270 for a total of four hours of instruction. Sessions can be 30, 40 or 60 minutes long, and instructors can work on flexible schedules.
Registration will open on Monday, June 1.
Gnarly Gnarwhals at Cuesta College
The Gnarly Gnarwhals program at the Cuesta College Aquatics Center, 1600 Highway 1 in San Luis Obispo, is a summer swim school for children.
Swim lessons are offered during three different sessions throughout the summer, with varying class levels for all ages.
Classes offered at Cuesta College are:
- Angelfish: Children 6 to 36 months
- Baby Belugas: 3 and 4 year olds
- Big Belugas: 5 year olds
- Clownfish: 3 years old and up
- Dolphins: 4 years old and up
- Electric Eels: 4 year old and up
Angelfish, Baby and Big Belugas classes are for beginner swimmers while Clownfish, Dolphins and Electric Eels courses are geared toward swimmers at intermediate to moderate skill levels.
The schedule for the swim sessions are:
- Session 1: June 8 to 18
- Session 2: June 22 to July 2
- Session 3: July 6 to 16
For $56, you get a total of four classes with two each week.
Lessons are offered on Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday.
There are multiple Gnarly Gnarwhals classes each day from 2 to 6 p.m.
Registration closes on Thursday, June 4.
5 Cities Swim School in Arroyo Grande
5 Cities Swim School, 425 Traffic Way. in Arroyo Grande, offers lessons from June 8 to Aug. 3.
The Summer Session Program is a nine-week swim school that meets once per week. Summer classes are 30 minutes long and available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday through Fridays.
Multiple group swim classes are offered.
Baby Fin classes are for children ages 3 to 36 months.
Children 3 years old and up can attend One Fin lessons for beginners, and Two Fin classes for more experienced swimmers. Group swim classes cost $32 per class.
Private one-on-one classes are available for $75 a class.
In addition, 5 Cities Swim School charges a one-time membership fee for $50 per household. Classes can be booked online.
Swim classes at Kennedy Club Fitness
Kennedy Club Fitness has three locations in SLO County each offering swimming classes.
The Atascadero location at 3534 El Camino Real offers private lessons that are 30 minutes long.
You can get five lessons for $189, or 10 for $310. Classes are held at the indoor or outdoor pool year-round.

Private or semi-private swim classes at Kennedy Club Fitness, 500 South River Road in Paso Robles, can be booked by emailing pasoservice@kennedyclubs.com.
Swim lessons at Kennedy Club Fitness, 188 Tank Farm Road in San Luis Obispo, can be private or semi-private, with a maximum of two people who are the same age or skill level.
A single private lesson costs $45. You can take five lessons for $170, and 10 for $320.
Semi-private lessons cost $27 per swimmer for a single session. Five lessons are $125 per swimmer, and 10 lessons are $230 per swimmer.

What are other swim classes in SLO County?
Avila Hot Springs is holding summer swim lessons through multiple sessions. Group lessons are $280 per child for eight classes while private lessons are $310 for four classes. There are six swimming level classes and the hot springs are located at 250 Avila Beach Drive.

Aqua Safe Swimming Lessons offers private lessons for children and adults in the indoor pool at the Embassy Suites hotel, 333 Madonna Road in San Luis Obispo. These include lessons for special needs students.
BabySeals Swim Academy, 14505 San Antonio Road in Atascadero, offers weeks-long programs or single lessons for new swimmers.
Infant Survival is a private four-week course with 16 classes designed for babies 6 to 12 months. It costs $560, plus a $97 registration fee.
Kinder Swim is a private six-week course for toddlers and children up to 8 years old. Including 24 lessons, the program costs $840 plus a $97 registration fee.
Both programs run four times a week, Monday through Thursday.
Group classes for children 8 and under are available for $35 per lesson.
Classes are 10 minutes long and can be booked online.
Paso Robles Sports Club at 2975 Union Road has swimming lessons for members and nonmembers all year long.
Private lessons cost $45 for members and $55 for non-members per session.
You can get five lessons for $210 to $260, or 10 lessons for $400 to $500.
Semi-private lessons with two swimmers cost $35 to $45 per session, or $160 to $210 for five lessons and $300 to $400 for 10 lessons.

Centennial Pool, 600 Nickerson Drive in Paso Robles, offers private swim lessons in the summer as well as Adaptive Aquatics classes for swimmers with intellectual disabilities.

SLO County Parks & Recreation said it is not offering swimming lessons this year at San Miguel Pool, Santa Margarita Lake Pool, Shamel Pool in Cambria, Shandon Pool and Templeton Pool.
Hardie Pool in Cayucos is closed for the season.
