SLO child on e-bike seriously injured in collision with car
A 12-year-old was critically injured over the weekend after they collided with a car while riding an e-bike in San Luis Obispo.
According to a San Luis Obispo Police Department news release, police were called to the scene at Spooner Drive and Welsh Court near DeVaul Park around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday for a reported vehicle versus pedestrian incident.
The injured child sustained major injuries after colliding with a car while riding an electric bike, the release said. The child was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
They were treated at a local hospital before being flown out of the area due to the significant nature of their injuries, the release said.
The child has since undergone multiple surgeries but was in stable condition in an out-of-area trauma center as of Tuesday, the Police Department said.
The driver of the involved vehicle was a San Luis Obispo resident and was cooperating with the investigation, the release said. Impairment did not seem to be a factor in the collision, police said.
The Police Department’s Severe Collision Investigative Detail has taken over the investigation, the release said.
