San Luis Obispo County is home to the best main street in California and the fifth-best in the nation, according to the readers of USA Today.

The outlet on April 15 named the ten best main streets in the nation as part of its series of Readers’ Choice awards.

Paso Robles landed at No. 5.

The SLO County spot was nominated alongside 19 other locations by an expert panel, and readers were given the chance to vote daily for their favorites.

Paso Robles was highlighted by USA Today as an “ideal getaway destination or stopping point on your next California road trip.” It was the only California city to land on the final list of the best main streets.

“Many local attractions are near Downtown City Park, which is just two blocks west of Highway 101,” the awards page said. “There’s enough food, history, and outdoor activities to warrant staying a night, which you should consider spending at the historic Paso Robles Inn.”

Paso Robles moved up on this year’s list compared to last year, when the city’s main street landed in the No. 8 spot, according to USA Today.

This year, Paso Robles was preceded on the top 10 list by Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in the top spot, followed by Waynesville, North Carolina; Emporia, Kansas; and Howell, Michigan.

Ogden, Utah came in at No. 6, followed by Ocean City, New Jersey; McMinnville, Oregon; Grapevine, Texas; and Virginia City, Nevada.

Paso Robles was not the only SLO County spot to be recognized in USA Today’s Readers’ Choice awards.

Both Pismo Beach and Morro Bay landed in the top 10 for the best small coastal town category. Meanwhile, the Downtown Farmers Market in SLO was named the ninth-best farmers market in the nation by USA Today.
