According to Time magazine, people have speculated for years about the origins of the 4/20 holiday, with some citing Adolf Hitler’s birthday or a Bob Dylan song.
Another story attributes the 4/20 tradition to Bay Area high school students in Marin County.
A group of friends in San Francisco coined the term in 1971 in reference to their plans to meet at 4:20 p.m. and visit a local weed garden, McClatchy Media previously reported
The numerals “420” became code for meeting up to smoke pot — particularly among Grateful Dead fans —and later, an unofficial calendar date for stoner celebrations.

Find movie theaters playing stoner comedies
Bay Theater, 464 Morro Bay Blvd. in Morro Bay, will be showing classic stoner comedy “Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke” on Monday at 4:20 p.m.
Tickets are $15 a person and can be bought online.
In SLO, the Palm Theatre at 817 Palm St. will screen “Smiley Face” at 7 p.m. Monday.
Tickets are $9 apiece, and can be purchased online or in person at the box office.
Do any local restaurants have 4/20 deals?
High St Market and Deli has a daily 4/20 deal at both of its locations in Los Osos and SLO.
From 4:20 and 5:30 p.m., deli sandwiches are $8.50 each.
High St. Market and Deli’s original location at 350 High St. in San Luis Obispo is open seven days a week, while the Los Osos location at 1326 Second St. is open Thursday through Monday.
Both restaurants are open 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
