Caltrans will implement overnight lane closures on Highway 101 on April 7-9, 2026, in order to remove temporary barriers and install permanent delineation at the site of the new underpass and frontage road construction at the intersection of the highway and Wellsona Road.

Ongoing work at a major San Luis Obispo County traffic project will soon result in temporary lane closures and altered traffic patterns.

According to a news release, Caltrans will implement overnight, alternating lane closures in both directions of Highway 101 near the intersection of Wellsona Road, where crews have spent more than a year constructing a new underpass and frontage roads.

The lanes will be closed from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the release said. One lane was slated to remain open in each direction.

Caltrans said that the traffic patterns would be unchanged for travelers traveling to or from Highway 101 and Wellsona Road, with direct access to westbound Wellsona remaining for southbound drivers, and direct access to eastbound Wellsona remaining for eastbound drivers. Detours are available for northbound drivers heading west and southbound drivers heading east, the release said.

The intersection of Highway 101 and Wellsona Road is known as one of the deadliest roadways in SLO County, The Tribune previously reported.

The underpass and frontage road project aims to create a safer path for drivers to travel. The upcoming lane closures will allow crews to remove the temporary barriers and install permanent delineation at the project site, the release said.

After delays, the $12.2 million project is expected to be complete by the end of April, Caltrans said.
