Roadway fatality

A Paso Robles man was killed in a head-on crash on Highway 46 in Kern County over the weekend.

At around 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning, the California Highway Patrol received a report of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 46 east of Kurt Road, which is around 12 miles east of the town of Wasco, according to a news release from the CHP.

Wasco is north of Bakersfield.

The CHP’s initial response to the crash site found a 20-year-old man from Wasco in a 2011 Toyota Corolla that was traveling eastbound on Highway 46, along with a 30-year-old Paso Robles man in a 2024 Toyota Prius, according to the release.

For reasons still under investigation, the Wasco resident traveled over the painted center dividing lines of the highway into the westbound lane, directly into the path of the Paso Robles man, according to the release.

Following a head-on collision, both drivers succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to the release.

The involvement of drugs or alcohol remains to be determined during an ongoing investigation, according to the release.
