Templeton Feed & Grain shares plan for new building on Main Street. Here’s a look

Templeton Feed & Grain plans to build a new store at its original location by the end of the year after the historic San Luis Obispo County structure was destroyed in a massive fire last Fourth of July.

The blaze — ignited by fireworks launched by four juveniles — gutted the grain towers and damaged the century-old storefront. The final parts of the badly burned building were torn down by excavators in early February.

Co-owner Rick Jermin said that Templeton Feed & Grain hopes to reopen at its former Main Street site this December. His family has owned and operated the store since 1946.

As the business moves through the county’s building and permitting processes, the timeline remains fluid, but county Supervisor John Peschong has been “wonderful” in helping push things along to get reconstruction started as quickly as possible, Jermin told The Tribune.

While planning and building renovations are underway, the company is operating at 1650 Ramada Drive in Paso Robles.

What will new Templeton Feed & Grain building look like?

On Thursday, Templeton Feed & Grain posted a rendering of its rebuilding plans on Facebook.

The new building will be composed of steel and raised in the same footprint as the old structure, according to Jermin, with an exterior facade that will be reminiscent of its past appearance.

“As far as the customers are going to be concerned, it’s going to look very similar,” he said.

However, Jermin said the 105-foot-tall silo towers will not be rebuilt because the construction costs would be “astronomical” and the new store will not manufacture feed and grain.

Instead, Templeton Feed & Grain will continue to have their recipes mixed and manufactured at Penny Newman Grain in Hanford.

Jermin said he’s looking forward to the day when they can reopen their doors on Templeton’s Main Street again.

“I’m excited for our future,” he said. “With everything that happened, I feel that we made the best out of a horrible thing with the help of the community.”
