Popular smash burger joint opens second SLO County location — in a familiar spot
A popular smash burger joint known for its straightforward menu and affordable prices has launched a second location in San Luis Obispo County.
Mosey’s Burgers opened a new window-service spot at 307 Morro Bay Blvd. in Morro Bay in mid-January.
The outdoor space was previously occupied by a burger and sandwich spot, Babydudes.
Mosey’s Burgers co-owner Ellen Sizemore said the new eatery serves up burgers, fries, onion rings and soft drinks similar to the offerings at its Cayucos location.
“(It’s a) super simple menu with just really quality ingredients,” Sizemore told The Tribune. “We’re trying to aim for quality instead of, you know, the big, giant menu of everything.”
The new Mosey’s Burgers location rests at the corner of Morro Bay Boulevard and Main Street in Morro Bay. The large patio is filled with picnic tables where people can enjoy burgers and fries after a beach day, Sizemore said.
Besides burgers, the outdoor space will soon host a beer-and-wine shed, a food truck and live music, according to Sizemore.
New smash burger spot opens in Morro Bay
The husband-and-wife duo behind Mosey’s Burgers — Ellen and Jeremy Sizemore — have a growing list of businesses under their belt.
Nearly a decade ago, Jeremy Sizemore started Spearhead Coffee in Paso Robles. He went on to open High Tide Deli & Cafe in Morro Bay as well.
Ellen Sizemore said she wanted to try her hand as entrepreneurship too, so she quit her wine industry job in 2023 to help her husband run the businesses.
In 2024, the couple launched Pie In The Sky Pizza in Cayucos, taking over the lease of the seaside spot that used to house Ocean Front Pizza.
Soon after, Surf Rats Donuts shut its doors and offered to hand over the lease at 101 D St. in Cayucos to the Sizemores. They jumped at the chance to open another restaurant in the small beach town.
“We’ll say ‘yes,’ and then figure it out later,” Ellen Sizemore said.
The Sizemores had tried their hand at coffee, sandwiches and pizzas. This time around, they decided to dish up some sizzling smash burgers, launching Mosey’s Burger in June.
“It just did really well right away, and we could really tell that it was something special,” Ellen Sizemore said of Mosey’s Burgers.
Soon after, the Sizemores took over Cayucos Coffee after they discovered the owners were looking to retire.
In the fall, the couple teamed up with co-owner Mark Mantel to take over Babydudes’ Morro Bay lease and open another smash burger shop.
SLO County restaurant will have food truck, beer and wine
Ellen Sizemore said she and her business partners were sold on starting another Mosey’s Burgers due to the large outdoor space at the corner of Morro Bay Boulevard and Main Street.
The new window-service smash burger spot will eventually be part of a food hub and beer garden that has plenty of seating and will even offer occasional live music, Sizemore said.
It will be “the place you want to go and hang out on a Saturday,” she said.
Part of that plan is chef Brenen Bonetti, whose local food truck The Grinning Bear is already parked at the Morro Bay property. He helms the smash burger offerings at Mosey’s Burgers and will soon start selling fried chicken out of the truck.
“It’ll just be really fun to have two different kind of options running in the same space,” Sizemore said.
Bonetti told The Tribune he’s excited to cook up the restaurant’s high-quality “plug-and-play” menu and bring more elevated offerings to Morro Bay’s food scene.
According to Sizemore, The Grinning Bear will be phase two of the beer garden’s offerings, while phase three will turn a shed on the property into a window-service beer and wine shack. However, she did not have an exact timeline for when those projects will be up and running.
What’s on the menu at Mosey’s Burgers?
Sizemore said the menu at Mosey’s Burgers in Morro Bay is similar to that of the Cayucos location, with smash burgers, fries and beer-battered onion rings cooked in beef tallow and soft drinks.
In the future, Mosey’s Burgers may serve up some breakfast options, milkshakes or other specialty items, Sizemore told The Tribune.
She recommended first-timers try the fries and the Double Burger, which holds two fresh beef patties topped with sliced cheddar, grilled onions, pickles and sauce on a brioche bun.
When is Mosey’s Burgers in Morro Bay open?
Mosey’s Burgers, 307 Morro Bay Blvd. in Morro Bay, did not have set hours as of Tuesday, Feb. 3, Sizemore said.
However, she advised customers to check Google for opening and closing times as the business continues tweaking business hours.
