Body found on beach days after swimmer goes missing in possible CA shark attack

A body has been recovered from a Santa Cruz County beach, just days after a swimmer went missing in a possible shark attack nearby.

On Saturday, firefighters recovered a body from the beach south of Davenport, according to Cal Fire CZU, which covers San Mateo and Santa Cruz areas. Firefighters used a rope system to bring the body from the beach to the bluffs, the agency said on X.

KSBW reported that California State Parks confirmed the body was a woman, but did not confirm whether it matched the description of the swimmer who went missing from what was believed to be a shark attack in Monterey County last week.

“Due to the close proximity and the timeframe of the incident in Monterey County, we’re working closely with Pacific Grove PD,” a Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson told KSBW. “We’ll provide more information when it becomes available.”

Further details were not immediately available.

The recovery comes after 55-year-old Erica Fox was reported missing off of Lovers Point in Pacific Grove on the afternoon of Dec. 28.

Authorities said two witnesses reported Fox may have encountered a shark while swimming offshore.
