Menorah candle lighting held at Mission Plaza in SLO
San Luis Obispo is celebrating Hanukkah downtown in Mission Plaza with eight nights of lighting the public menorah in front of Old Mission San Luis Obispo.
About a dozen people came out to witness Gordon Mullin, Nachshon Margalit and daughter Ava, 8, light the second candle on the menorah and sing a traditional song.
The celebration started Sunday and ends on the evening of Dec. 21. The lighting will take place each evening at 5 p.m.
The ceremony is led by various area congregations and Jewish organizations and features songs and family-friendly activities.
The Mission Plaza tradition dates back to 1990 when plans were made by Rabbi Harry Manhoff of Congregation Beth David and Father Jim Nisbet of Old Mission Church.
