New Traffic Way Bridge to open in Arroyo Grande after 7-month closure

The new Traffic Way Bridge in Arroyo Grande is set to open this week after a seven-month closure.

Construction began in May to replace the original bridge, which dated to 1932 and “had reached the end of its design life,” the city said in a news release.

Inspections on the original bridge identified a variety of structural concerns, including deck cracking, failed expansion joints, spalling concrete, and erosion within the creek channel.

“This Project was a much-needed improvement to ensure the safety of our community for decades to come. While we knew that the complete closure of the bridge was going to be impactful, the City Council’s leadership, the community’s resilience, and the staff’s dedication all contributed to this successful outcome,” City Manager Matthew Downing said in the release.

During the closure, the city worked to maintain access to businesses on Traffic Way. It also added temporary traffic control measures, including signals.

Minor cosmetic work would continue into January, but the detours put in place around the construction will be removed, the city said.

The city will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the project’s completion in the new year, with a date still to be announced. For more information on the project, visit arroyogrande.org/TWB.
