SLO is getting a massive new park with pickleball courts, sports fields and more
A new park is coming to San Luis Obispo, featuring pickleball courts and sports fields.
The San Luis Obispo City Council approved the construction contract for the Righetti Community Park at its Dec. 2 meeting, marking a major step in making “one of the most anticipated projects in the city’s park system” a reality.
According to a city news release, the council awarded the multi-phase contract to Brough Construction Inc. for a total of $13.6 million.
“This is one of the largest park projects in over 20 years and a significant investment in our city’s future,” Parks and Recreation director Greg Avakian said in the release. “Righetti Community Park will be a vibrant, inclusive space where people of all ages can come together, stay active and enjoy the beauty of San Luis Obispo.”
The new park will be built in the Righetti Ranch neighborhood off Orcutt Road.
Its first phase will include roughly 11.25 acres of new playground and natural turf recreation fields at Tiburon Way and Ranch House Road, while two additional phases will bring pickleball courts and a bike pump track, according to the release.
It will also add basketball, tennis and bocce ball courts; restrooms; hydration stations; parking lots; shaded seating; a barbecue and picnic area; and bike and walking paths.
The park will connect with the new trailhead at Righetti Hill and its two corresponding trails, which opened in May, according to the release.
Further down the line, the project will also add a smaller 1.16-acre linear park with a dog park and community gardens at Tiburon Way and Righetti Ranch Road and a 0.2-acre pocket park at Twin Creek and Righetti Ranch roads.
Construction is expected to begin in the spring in 2026.
