Cyclist on e-bike suffers ‘severe head trauma’ in crash with SUV in SLO
A crash between an e-bike rider and an SUV sent the cyclist to the hospital with a major head injury Tuesday afternoon.
According to a news release from the San Luis Obispo Police Department, officers responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls related to a crash between an e-bike and car near the intersection of Broad and South streets at around 3:47 p.m.
On arrival, officers found a 56-year-old man in the southbound lane of Broad Street with a significant head injury, according to the release.
The cyclist was riding an e-bike without wearing a helmet, and suffered “severe head trauma” when he was hit by a Subaru Outback driven by a 29-year-old woman, according to the release.
The man was transported to a local hospital for care after receiving emergency medical care from the San Luis Obispo Fire Department, according to the release.
The woman remained at the scene and was cooperative, according to the release.
Impairment from drugs or alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the collision, according to the release.
Due to the severity of the incident, the northbound and southbound lanes of Broad Street between Chorro Street and South Street were temporarily closed until around 7:20 p.m., according to the release.
The crash remains under active investigation.
