A female pedestrian was hit and killed by a pickup as she crossed a Highway 101 on-ramp in Atascadero on Monday morning.

The fatal collision happened around 10:20 a.m. on the southbound San Anselmo Road on-ramp, California Highway Patrol Officer Ryan Armstrong told The Tribune Monday morning.

Atascadero resident Rachel Hoffman, 69, died at the scene, the Highway Patrol later said in a news release.

According to the news release, Hoffman was walking east on the sidewalk of San Anselmo Road, crossing the highway on-ramp within the crosswalk when a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by 66-year-old Gary Tipton, also an Atascadero resident, made a left turn onto the highway entrance, hitting Hoffman. There were no other passengers in Tipton’s vehicle at the time of the crash.

Life-saving measures were attempted, but Hoffman was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.

Atascadero residents posted on Facebook that the ramp had been closed Monday morning following the crash.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were suspected to have been a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
