Search underway as another person swept out to sea at Big Sur coast
A search was underway Sunday after a man was swept out to sea along the Big Sur coast — just a week after a father and daughter died after being pulled out by waves in the same state park.
According to a news release from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, the department was notified by California State Parks of two women and one man who were swept into the ocean at Soberanes Point in Garrapata State Park sometime before 3 p.m. Saturday
The two women self rescued, and were sent to a local hospital with unknown injuries, the release said.
The man, last seen wearing a white turban, a black shirt, shorts and vest jacket, remains missing.
A multi-agency response was conducted Saturday into the later evening, according to the release. At about 4:24 p.m. during the search, the U.S. Coast Guard on a helicopter spotted what looked like a body, but lost visual due to high surf, the release said
Search efforts were suspended by Saturday night due to darkness and for the safety of the first responders. They were expected to continue into Sunday.
The Sheriff’s Office reminded people of the current beach hazard warning in the area and asked people to stay off rocks and away from the water’s edge.
This was the second similar incident in a little over a week.
On Nov. 14, the Sheriff’s Office began a search for a missing 7-year-old who was swept into the ocean at Garrapata State Beach alongside her father.
The father was located and sent to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The daughter’s body was found after a three-day search.
