A Nipomo woman was found dead during a surf rescue in Pismo Beach on Sunday, authorities confirmed.

The incident began with a report of a body in the water below Ventana Grill, according to Pismo Beach Police Department Cmdr. Dan Herlihy.

Multiple agencies had been called out for the surf rescue around 12:30 p.m., Cal Fire spokesperson Eva Grada said. The response included a boat from Avila Beach and Port San Luis, jet skis and a California Highway Patrol helicopter, Grada said.

With their assistance, emergency responders were able to locate a person in the water and take them to shore, Grada said.

The person — later identified as a 40-year-old female from Nipomo — was deceased, Herlihy said. The cause of death was under investigation and pending autopsy results.

“At this time, there is no indication of foul play,” Herlihy said, adding that the woman’s next of kin have been notified and her name was “being withheld out of respect for the family’s privacy.”

No other information was expected to be released, he added.

According to Grada, the surf was especially strong in that area on Sunday, with 4- to- 10-foot waves.

She warned the public to “never turn your back on the water” and always be aware of the potential for swells to come up and knock over a person.
