1 person dead in SLO County car crash and fire

One person died after a vehicle crashed and caught fire near Nacimiento Lake on Monday afternoon.

The crash happened just after 2 p.m. at the intersection of Nacimiento Lake Drive and Steelhead Road, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information Page.

At the time, the vehicle was off the roadway and the fire had spread into a 10-by-10-foot area of vegetation, according to emergency radio chatter.

By 2:08 p.m., the vegetation fire had been put out, but the car was still in flames with someone inside. Medics were requested.

By 2:11 p.m., the vehicle fire was extinguished and medics were conducting CPR on the person, according to the traffic incident information page.

Mercy Air was called to transport the patient to a hospital at 2:23 p.m., but by 2:25 medics stopped CPR and a coroner was requested, according to radio chatter.

The identity of the individual is not known at this time.
