Helicopter rescues person who tried to cross massive Hwy. 1 slide on Big Sur coast

A CHP helicopter rescued a person who tried to cross the massive landslide blocking a portion of Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast on Thursday.

According to Cal Fire, the person attempted to cross the Regent’s Slide from the San Luis Obispo County side over to the Monterey County side on Thursday morning.

The person, who was not in a vehicle, slid down from the roadway onto a ledge of the slide.

After assessing the situation, crews found that the victim was not injured, Monterey County battalion chief Josh Silveira told The Tribune.

A CHP airlift team was sent from Paso Robles to assist in the rescue and was able to transport the person back up to the highway for a medical evaluation, Silveira said.

The person was ultimately released without injuries, he added.

Cal Fire said the Big Sur Fire Brigade was the lead agency on the rescue. The Tribune reached out to the agency for more information, but did not immediately receive a response.
