4 horses killed, 2 people injured in SLO County barn fire
A barn fire in Atascadero ignited surrounding vegetation and destroyed the structure late Saturday afternoon.
Four horses died as a result of the fire, officials said, and the two property owners transported themselves to a nearby hospital.
According to a news release from the city of Atascadero, the fire burned 9 acres of vegetation.
The fire, which occurred on San Carlos Road, was stopped within less than an hour upon the arrival of Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services, with assistance from Cal Fire and the San Luis Obispo County, Templeton, Paso Robles and Santa Margarita fire departments.
Neighboring residents also began weeding out potentially flammable materials from the surrounding area, saving four nearby structures in the process, the release said.
The two property owners self-transported to Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton.
No additional injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still undetermined.
