3 SLO County spots named ‘most charming’ towns in California. Which ones?

San Luis Obispo County is home to three of the best small towns in California, according to U.S. News and World Report.

To create a list of the 21 Most Charming Small Towns in California, the publication sought out beautiful communities across the state where you can ditch big city crowds for the quiet life.

The top destinations “run the gamut of California’s uniquely varied landscapes, including mountain towns, secluded coastal communities, valley gems and more,” the report said.

Three towns in the county Cambria, Pismo Beach and Morro Bay landed on the non-numbered list.

Here’s what to know about the dazzling local destinations:

Oxalis, a flowering plant often considered a weed, is also known as false shamrock because of the shape of its trifoliate leaves. Other names include wood sorrel, yellow sorrel or sour grass.

Why is Cambria among most charming places in California?

Nestled in northern San Luis Obispo County, Cambria features stunning ocean views and artistic wonders, according to U.S. News and World Report.

The coastal village of about 6,000 people is a short drive from historic Heart Castle in San Simeon, and several art galleries in town offer creative works from local artists.

Cambria’s “Main Street contains business fronts boasting a variety of gorgeous architectural styles that are made even more appealing thanks to the towering Monterey pine trees that enshroud the area,” U.S. News and World Report said.

The publication also praised Cambria for its natural beauty, including stellar views at nearby Moonstone Beach and Fiscalini Ranch Preserve.

Pismo Beach lands on best California small towns list

Pismo Beach landed on U.S. News and World’s list of the most charming small towns in California due to its abundance of outdoor activities.

Its neighboring natural preserve — Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area — is an expansive playground where visitors can take tours, rent all-terrain vehicles or ride on horseback through the sand, the report said.

Tourists and residents can also jump in the water and go kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding or kiteboarding at Pismo Beach.

“Stop by the Monarch Butterfly Grove to watch thousands of butterflies flutter about .... or take a stroll along the beach, which boasts beautiful views of the town’s lush coastal hillsides,” U.S. News and World Report said.

Why Morro Bay is a top small town in California

Morro Bay, home to nearly 11,000 people, is a relaxing seaside retreat for those looking for a “low-key, laid-back atmosphere,” U.S. News and World Report said.

Visitors can learn about local wildlife by wandering through Morro Bay State Park or gaze at the impressive monolith on the horizon.

“The star of the show is Morro Rock, a 576-foot-tall volcanic plug that was previously used by mariners as a navigation tool as far back as 1542,” the publication said.

U.S. News and World Report said the coastal enclave is perfect for travelers searching for a spot to unwind and soak in the scenery.

How U.S. News and World Report made its list

U.S. News and World Report said that it came up with its list of California’s most charming small towns by choosing locations with small populations that were charming and chock-full of unique qualities, including “coastal views, quaint main streets and outdoor pursuits.”

Contributor Sharael Kolberg said she drew on ”personal experience and exceptional research skills” when update the list.
