Update: 2 earthquakes rattle SLO County in nearly the same spot

If you live in Atascadero, you might’ve been woken up by a small earthquake Monday morning.

Then, about 10 hours later, a similar mild quake hit near the exact same spot.

A 2.4-magnitude earthquake hit near Atascadero at 6:31 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake hit in the hills west of Atascadero, south of Highway 41 and east of San Miguel Road. It was located at a depth of 3.9 miles below the surface, give or take half a mile, according to the USGS.

The second quake was recorded at 4:38 p.m. just north of the first. It was 2.9 magnitude at a depth of 3.4 miles.

On the USGS’ “Did You Feel It?” page, more than 150 people posted in response to the second quake, from San Luis Obispo to Paso Robles and as far west as Morro Bay.
