What’s that roadwork in downtown SLO? City warns of street closures, delays
If you’re expecting to visit downtown San Luis Obispo soon, you might want to plan ahead.
According to the city, work was expected to begin Monday on replacing the sewer line on Mill Street downtown.
This is part of an effort to upgrade “vital groundwork to enhance the reliability, capacity and safety of our water and sewer systems in San Luis Obispo,” the city said in a news release.
The most recent work will focus on replacing the city’s aging sewer pipes and waterlines.
Similar work is already underway on California Boulevard, Stafford Street, Ella Street, Sierra Way and George Street, according to a city website on the project.
In total, the city expects to replace nearly 8,000 feet of “aging sewer mains” and install roughly 350 feet of additional sewer pipes.
Where and when will work take place?
According to the city, potholing work to mark underground utilities is expected to begin Monday morning at Morro Street between Palm and Mill streets.
The preliminary work was expected to then stretch to Mill Street between Morro and Pepper streets throughout the afternoon before concluding at about 4 p.m.
The full extent of construction is expected to take between four and six months.
Expect delays due to construction
The city warned that residents and visitors should expect “minor traffic impacts” throughout the span of construction.
This includes lane shifting, flagging, sidewalk closures and intermittent road closures with detours, according to the release.
People were reminded to allow extra travel time while construction is ongoing and to remember to reduce speed and exercise caution while driving through the impacted areas.
“Our dedicated crews are working diligently to make San Luis Obispo safer for everyone,” the city said in the release.
