SLO driver crashed into PG&E pole, causing road closure and power outage

A suspected drunk driver crashed into a power pole in San Luis Obispo early Tuesday morning, knocking out electricity in the area and prompting a temporary road closure while PG&E made repairs, according to the San Luis Obispo Police Department.

A white Chevy Suburban crashed into a power pole near the intersection of Elks Lane and Prado Road at about 1:40 a.m. on Tuesday, San Luis Obispo Police Department spokesperson Christine Wallace said.

A passenger suffered minor injuries, but police did not have any information to share about the driver, she said.

Elks Lane and a section of Prado Road were closed as of 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning while PG&E repaired the power pole, she said.

Electricity was still out in the area on Tuesday morning, Wallace said. Initially, 985 customers lost power due to the crash, according to outage tracking site findenergy.com.

According to the PG&E power outage map, customers in the neighborhood lost electricity at 1:48 a.m.

By 10:15 a.m., eight customers were still without electricity.

Power should be fully restored by 3 p.m., according to PG&E.

The crash is under investigation. Due to “extenuating circumstances” related to the investigation, police do not know when they will be able to share more details about the crash, Wallace said.
