The state of California is hiring employees across the county for full-time positions ranging from engineers to dietitians and scientists.

State jobs are known for offering competitive benefits and enrollment in the state’s public pension plan.

Look through some of the latest state jobs available in SLO County on the CalCareers website, as of Tuesday, April 1:

Chief engineer II | Permanent, full time

  • Department: Military
  • Salary: $6,783 to $8,665 per month

The chief engineer is responsible for supervising staff amid day-to-day operations and maintenance, including fixes for heating, ventilation, refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.

The employee also ensures that auxiliary electrical plants and mechanical and power equipment are running properly at state buildings.

Cook specialist I | Permanent, full time

  • Department: State Hospitals
  • Salary: $3,688 to $4,520 per month

Under the direction of the supervising cook, the the cook specialist prepares and distributes menu items that adhere to patients’ dietary restrictions, practicing good hygiene, order and cleanliness in the role.

The cook specialist also supervises and coordinates the activities of some assigned patients.

Environmental scientist | Permanent, full time

  • Department: State Water Resources Control Board
  • Salary: $4,269 to $8,877 per month

The environmental scientist studies toxic pollutants and the impacts of new contaminants on San Luis Obispo County water quality and aquatic ecosystems.

The employee develops projects that incorporate emerging science surrounding pesticides and harmful bacteria. Other duties include reviewing peer-reviewed research and designing new approaches that identify harmful pollutants in the water.

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule.

Licensed resident civil engineer | Permanent, full time

The licensed resident civil engineer works under the direction of the California Department of Transportation’s senior construction engineer.

The civil engineer completes complex transportation engineering tasks and works on construction projects, according to the job description.

The civil engineer also assigns work, provides instructions and makes decisions on challenging engineering problems.

Neuropsychologist | Permanent, full time

The neuropsychologist is responsible for supporting and consulting with other in-unit psychologists and clinicians.

The employee reviews medical charts, conduct patient interviews and diagnoses neuropsychological impairment, in addition to recommending patient interventions.

The neuropsychologist also provides hospital-wide neuropsychological patient assessments, among other duties.

The psychologist participates in interdisciplinary team evaluations in addition to working with other psychiatrists, nurses and staff.

The registered dietitian completes nutrition assessments for assigned patients and evaluates the effectiveness of those interventions. The employee maintains information on current patients, and communicates with staff about individual patient meal and nourishment plans.

Other duties include consulting with staff as issues arise, participating in department meetings and attending professional practice groups.
