SLO County sanitary district won’t rehire general manager after out-of-state move
The Cayucos Sanitary District is considering switching from a general manager to a consultant after its current staff lead moved out of state.
The March 20 decision to go that route wasn’t unanimous, however.
The board’s 3-2 vote came after a closed session discussion about general manager Rick Koon, who now lives out of state.
Koon told the district he was moving before he did so, acting general manager Gayle Good told The Tribune on Tuesday, adding that Koon’s most recent contract had expired at the end of February.
The board was initially set to consider a new six-month contract for Koon, which would have paid him $98,429 for a minimum of 30 consecutive hours work per month, including for the board’s monthly meetings, despite his living out of state.
Instead, the board majority decided to not take action on the contract and instead proposed a consultant services agreement, according to the unapproved minutes of the meeting.
Board President Robert Enns made a motion to that effect, which was seconded by Director John Curti — but then Enns and Director Shirley Lyon voted no.
The board will consider its next steps at a special meeting, the date for which had not yet been scheduled as of Tuesday.
Next Cayucos Sanitary District meeting canceled
Meanwhile, according to the district’s website, the board’s regular April 17 meeting has been canceled, due to a lack of quorum.
It was expected to be Director Hannah Miller’s last meeting, Good said. Miller told the board in February that she was resigning.
Applications to fill the vacancy, available on the website, are due by May 7.
Tribune requests for comment from the district’s directors were not returned as of Tuesday afternoon.
