SLO’s Madonna Inn ranked No. 2 hotel in California in new poll. What came in first place?

San Luis Obispo’s iconic Madonna Inn is one of the best family-run hotels in the nation, according to a new survey from Gunther Volkswagen Fort Lauderdale.

The hotel, known for its pink color scheme and kitschy aesthetic, was the second-best California mom-and-pop hotel, the Florida-based car dealership said in a news release.

Gunther Volkswagen surveyed more than 3,000 road trippers to determine the best family-run hotels and motels in every state.

“These small, family-run spots have a warmth and personality that the big chains often miss,” the car dealership said in the release. “Think quirky decorations, a homemade breakfast whipped up with care or a chat with an owner who knows every nook of the town you’re passing through.”

Why is Madonna Inn in SLO among best places to stay?

The Madonna Inn ranked No. 2 on Gunther Volkswagen’s list of the top mom-and-pop lodgings in California due to its creative quarters and “anything but ordinary” energy.

“Every room’s got its own wild theme — think bold colors, quirky decor, and a vibe that’s equal parts playful and over-the-top,” the car dealership said in the release. “It’s the kind of place that feels like a fever dream in the best way, where you’re just as likely to sleep in a cave as a fairytale suite.”

Gunther Volkswagen also praised the Madonna Inn’s one-of-a-kind architecture, calling it a “family-owned marvel” where travelers have memorable experiences at a legendary location.

It’s not the first time the San Luis Obispo hotel has earned attention as a top place to stay.

Media website Thrillist named the Madonna Inn the “most unique” hotel in California in 2022.

Where is No. 1 hotel in California?

The Upham Hotel in Santa Barbara landed first place as the best family-run hotel in California, according to Gunther Volkswagen.

The boutique hotel boasts an “understated elegance” with refined rooms and welcoming hospitality, the release said.

“It’s been around since the 19th century, and you can feel that legacy in the air — a quiet sophistication that makes it a peaceful escape from the bustle,” the car dealership said. “This is a spot where you’re treated like more than just a name on the register.”

How did Florida car dealership come up with list?

Gunther Volkswagen Fort Lauderdale surveyed a total of 3,014 travelers to create its list of the best family-run hotels and motels in the United States, according to its website.

“We wanted to shine a light on these incredible family-run places that make road trips so special,” Joseph Gunther IV of Gunther Volkswagen Fort Lauderdale said in the release. “Our survey shows travelers don’t just want a bed they’re after that personal connection and unique vibe you only get from mom-and-pop spots.”
